LOS ANGELES - Reimagined award shows amid the COVID-19 pandemic allowed awards season to go on, but they’ve failed to do much in terms of ratings.
So when the 93rd annual Academy Awards starts Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, organizers want to make it clear that the Oscars won’t look like just another award show conducted via Zoom.
The celebration of the year in film will be shot like a movie itself. Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh is leading a team of producers who are determined to make this year’s show stand out.

London-based film sales and financing house Embankment Films has closed a major international deal for “Joyride,” starring Olivia Colman, who is Oscar nominated for Florian Zeller’s “The Father,” another of Embankment’s titles. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has bought “Joyride” for the world, excluding North America and U.K.
The deal comes as Embankment – led by Tim Haslam and Hugo Grumbar – amps up its pre-sales slate, with the recent addition of Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern to the cast of Zeller’s “The Son,” which sees Zeller reuniting with “The Father” co-writer Christopher Hampton, and news that Helen Mirren will play Israel’s legendary Prime Minister Golda Meir in “Golda,” directed by Oscar winner Guy Nattiv, and produced by BAFTA winner Michael Kuhn (“Florence Foster Jenkins

Florian Zeller, director of the Best Picture nominee “The Father,” has set his follow-up film based on another of his plays called “The Son,” and Laura Dern and Hugh Jackman are set to star.
Zeller will adapt the screenplay for “The Son” along with his writing partner on “The Father,” Christopher Hampton (“Dangerous Liaisons,” “Atonement”). Zeller will also produce along with Oscar winners Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, Joanna Laurie for See-Saw Films and Christophe Spadone.

See-Saw Films is producing the drama, which like Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning The Father, is adapted from one of Zeller s stage plays.
The Father may still be in the awards race a two-time BAFTA winner last weekend and currently up for six Oscars, including best film, best actor for Anthony Hopkins and best supporting actress for Olivia Colman but writer/director Florian Zeller has wasted no time on capitalizing on his directorial debut s momentum to get moving on the follow-up.
