Today, the Canterbury Homeowners Class Action has been launched to provide Southern Response policyholders a choice in their battle for full compensation from Southern Response for their quake-damaged homes.
The new class action aims to ensure around 3,000 homeowners who were short-changed by Southern Response in the settlement of their claims before 1 October 2014, receive a greater proportion of any compensation paid by Southern Response.

Southern Response claimants underpaid for earthquake damage to their homes are suddenly faced with an abundance of choice, including a government offer that could head off a $300 million class action before it reaches court. Earthquake Commission Minister David Clark announced on Monday a new cash package, to be offered to eligible policyholders who settled with the state-owned quake insurer before October 2014. A second, competing class action case – the Canterbury Homeowners Class Action – was also launched on Monday. It is promising lower fees than the first, being run by Christchurch firm GCA Lawyers.

The new class action
aims to ensure around 3,000 homeowners who were
short-changed by Southern Response in the settlement of
their claims before 1 October 2014, receive a greater
proportion of any compensation paid by Southern
Response.
The action will be led by a highly
experienced legal team including leading barrister Davey
Salmon, and the country’s largest litigation law firm,
Meredith Connell, which has substantial experience running
class action claims. The claim will be funded by New
