The Southern Response court case now looks like paving the way for an overhaul of the justice system (video first published in September 2018).
Southern Response claimants underpaid for earthquake damage to their homes are suddenly faced with an abundance of choice, including a government offer that could head off a $300 million class action before it reaches court. Earthquake Commission Minister David Clark announced on Monday a new cash package, to be offered to eligible policyholders who settled with the state-owned quake insurer before October 2014. A second, competing class action case – the Canterbury Homeowners Class Action – was also launched on Monday. It is promising lower fees than the first, being run by Christchurch firm GCA Lawyers.
