100,000 masks donated for CPS students

The foundation s donation includes a $14,000 grant, which allows the district to buy 100,000 child-size face masks for students. Additional masks will be delivered to CPS buildings. The foundation is proud to be able to provide disposable masks to CPS students, particularly as they return to in-person learning five days a week, Cindy Mustard, president of the CPSF board of directors, said. Work to resume on resolving Hickman High School pool situation Planning work that began before the pandemic to find ideas for a pool in Columbia that can hold competitive swim meets with lots of spectators is about to resume. Jen Rukstad, assistant superintendent for secondary education, said when it s safe to travel again, swimming enthusiasts in the city plan to visit such aquatic centers. She shared the information Tuesday at a meeting of the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee of the Columbia school board. A swimming summit was held in January 2020 at the Activity and Recreation Center to discuss the idea of retiring the more than 50-year-old pool at Hickman High School, which is only suitable for very small meets.

In Columbia, voters in the Second and Sixth wards were casting ballots for City Council seats. In the Second Ward, Bill Weitkemper, Jim Meyer and Andrea Waner are competing to replace Mike Trapp, who chose not to seek election to a fourth three-year term. In the Sixth Ward, incumbent Betsy Peters is seeking a third term and faces challenges from Randy Minchew and Philip Merriman. There are five people seeking one of two three-year terms on the Columbia School Board. They are incumbent Teresa Maledy and newcomers Luke Neal, Aron Saylor, Katherine Sasser and Jeanne Snodgrass. A special election to replace Kip Kendrick as 45th District state representative is also on the ballot. The candidates are Democrat David Tyson Smith and Libertarian Glenn Nielsen.
