estimate as early as today which is pretty key to the future of this republican health care bill. we have members of the gop say we don t know how much it costs yet, how can we debate it? reporter: we re expecting to hear from the cbo numbers a lot of raspberry won t like. they ran on the idea that make is too expensive. number one is they re going to argue this is a three-part plan, the bill that we re putting forward is just part one. parts two and three will make a difference in bringing costs down. but the other part of their argument is that the cbo has just been wrong, that when obamacare came out, their numbers were wrong. peter orzack, who used to head the congressional budget office said kind of good luck with that
do you see a sliver of a glimmer of a possible deal or the makings of one? well, i sure hope that there is. there s every reason that we should be working toward that direction. we have a major concern in this country as it relates to our national debt of $17 trillion. you know, that s really the big elephant in the room. when you look at where we re headed as a country and the economic collapse that could occur, peter orzack that you had talked to, erskine bowles or of course paul ryan, they will tell you the same thing that. our country is headed toward a collapse like greece. can you see a deal being done that does not in some way defund obama care from your standpoint? is that something you would approve? well, i think to be very clear with you, we have made three proposals to the democrats in the senate. and the last one said, hey, what about this subsidy?
congress. ok, here s all this money, you guys figure out how to spend it. and a lot of it was not spent wisely. my feeling is, yeah, there s only so much money you can spend. in the book, i write about how even some of obama s own advisors like peter orzack had concerns there s only so much money that congress can get out the door. to fix that, there s two things you want to do. one is cut taxes. they could have done more. second thing is they could have sent more money to the states that are laying out firefighters and policemen. they tried to do that. they should have done a little bit more. it was congress that prevented them from doing that. i think that would have been pretty effective. you don t want to lay off a bunch of teachers in a recession. you hate to have anybody laid off. what, though, do you feel is the political peril for the president if he fumbled the stimulus and the economy? look, obviously the unemployment is the single most important factor in determining w
