BELLOWS FALLS â By a close 3-2 vote, the Rockingham Select Board Wednesday night finally made a decision on replacing the decrepit Depot Street Bridge.
The majority of the board chose a $7.2 million plan, which will move the canal crossing from its current location, and place it further north. A pedestrian bridge will be built in the location of the current Depot Street Bridge, which will be removed.
Voting for the more expensive solution were Select Board members Richard Cowan, Bonnie North and Elijah Zimmer. Voting against it because of the cost were Chairman Peter Golec and Board member Susan Hammond.

BELLOWS FALLS â After months of on-again, off-again discussion, the town of Rockingham and the village of Bellows Falls have told the Vermont Agency of Transportation âno thanksâ to its driverless car experiment.
The automatic car project would have allowed a private company to come in and use local roads to test the vehicles.
In Vermont, only the town of Springfield has signed up for the experiment, and now with the Rockingham-Bellows Falls rejection, only the town of Alburgh has expressed interest, state officials said.
During one of their regular joint meetings this week, the Rockingham Select Board and Bellows Falls Village Board of Trustees failed to even muster a motion on the issue, with Agency of Transportation officials watching via Zoom.

BELLOWS FALLS â The Rockingham Select Board and Bellows Falls Village Trustees took their first steps Tuesday evening to address the financial mess left behind by former Finance Director Shannon Burbela.
At the suggestion of Municipal Manager Scott Pickup, the two boards, meeting jointly Tuesday evening, established a new finance committee to work with Pickup on the financial issues, as well as find a new finance director.
Pickup said the town and village needed to âre-establish baseline credibility.â
The town and village have brought in the New England Management Resource Center to help sort through the extensive problems uncovered in the finances, which extend from balancing its bank accounts to misfiled and miscategorized revenue and expenses, lack of correct tax status, and overcharged credit card fees.

BELLOWS FALLS â The town of Rockingham and the village of Bellows Falls have âparted companyâ with its finance director, Shannon Burbela, after a critical audit report and other examination found numerous problems and deficiencies in the village and townâs books dating back to 2019.
Burbelaâs last day was June 14, according to Municipal Manager Scott Pickup. She was paid about $76,000 a year from the town, village and the villageâs water and sewer departments, according to Bellows Falls Village President Deborah Wright.
Pickup said Burbela, a resident of Chester, would remain as a consultant to the town and village as it sorts through various issues, including pending litigation against the village while Burbela was also acting as personnel director.
