muntean, and cnn aviation analyst, peter goals. he is a former managing director. pete, walk us through what happened here. this was an incredible same. the moment of impact was just two seconds into the video. you can see the a350 go up into a fireball. it appears that the impact happened right on the nose. you can see the nose landing gear on fire as this flight was landing on the runway at haneda airport. both airplanes involved, the a350 and commuter airplane, not really used much in the states these days. is that smaller, relatively speaking? a lot smaller. the fact that anyone came out of this alive is pretty incredible, and a testament to the design of the airbus. the evacuation went very smoothly and very efficiently.
collision course friday night. hold position. reporter: air traffic control recordings detail how the american flight was told to go to the end of jfk s runway 4 left, but instead crossed that runway, in the path of the delta flight that was taking off. a mistake caught by air traffic controllers with just seconds to spare. delta 1943, cancel takeoff plans. delta 1943, cancel takeoff plan. reporter: the delta pilot slammed on the brakes, stopping approximately 1,000 feet before where the american airlines flight had just crossed the runway. it would have been catastrophic had a collision taken place. reporter: former ntsb managing director peter goals thinks investigators will now dig into whether the fault lies with the pilots of the american flight, apparently confused over directions from air traffic control. the last class we were given, we were cleared to cross, is that correct?
