Saving the Memorial Day Parade - Hudson Reporter

Hudson Reporter Saving the Memorial Day Parade × After having recent productive discussions with our local veterans, I am very happy that we will be able to bring back the Bayonne Memorial Day Parade in 2022.  The outgoing Memorial Day Parade Committee, which was made up of the veterans, will be succeeded by a committee appointed by the City Administration.  This change is taking place, because the number of Bayonne veterans is declining as they advance in age.  My father is a proud veteran.  I would not have been able to look him and other veterans in the eye if we had not found a way to revive the parade. The veterans will still be available for Color Guard requests and patriotic ceremonies throughout the year, such as Veterans’ Day, Pearl Harbor Day, the Holocaust Memorial Program, Flag Day, and marching in the Memorial Day Parade.

Bayonne s Memorial Day Parade will return - Hudson Reporter

The Bayonne Memorial Day Parade will be back in 2022. In late April, the Bayonne Memorial Day Parade Committee announced that the 2021 parade was cancelled due to COVID-19, as was the case in 2020. COVID-19 restrictions made it impossible to plan and organize bands, marching groups, public and private organizations, and anyone else who would have participated. However, due to the aging veteran population and the declining membership in the posts that have made up the Memorial Day Parade Committee, the committee announced the event was permanently cancelled.

BAYONNE BRIEFS - Hudson Reporter

Hudson Reporter × Memories of Bayonne past Mayor James Davis recalled an encounter with two residents while driving them to get their vaccines during a snowstorm. “Recently, I had the privilege of driving Bennett and Susan Klausner to Bayonne Medical Center for their vaccines,” Davis said. “Ben’s dad, Sam Klausner, was the owner of Sam’s Confectionery on 4th Street and JFK. As a young boy growing up downtown, many of us spent quite a bit of time in Sam’s store learning how to play pinball and drinking cherry Coke. Bayonne has many families whose lives intersect, and these stories are part of who we are!”
