i mean, that was an extraordinary moment on the house of representatives. so i think you re seeing a united democratic party rallying behind hakeem jeffries as our leader. it s going to take the fight to kevin mccarthy. certainly. yeah, it s interesting. i wonder if i can claudia tenney, the congresswoman has we ve spoken a couple of times in the past couple of days. she s joining us now. and i d like to quickly get your thoughts, if i can, congresswoman. officially no longer congresswoman elect on what you thought of this night. we thought it was going to be the 14th round. kevin mccarthy was confident and didn t quite get the votes he needed. yeah, well, obviously, he was disappointing and it came down to personality conflicts here when some of these members had said they would either vote present or for mccarthy. so we d have the votes and that s why we didn t adjourn. unfortunately, you know, there were some last minute juggling and we had to go to another vote . it was unfortu
the senate will be involved. the president will be involved. they re going to have to renege on that concession. one of the next things that s going to happen in the near future, alice, is committee assignments. this is not entirely up to speaker mccarthy. there s a steering committee that assigns members of congress to the various committees. how do you expect or where do you expect some of these conservative rebels, as we ve been calling them, in terms of what they may or may not get in terms of committee assignments? i don t think there s going to be as much under the christmas tree for them in that regard as they seem to think. speaking with a lot of members of the rational republican group throughout the weekend, specifically late into the night last night, they were frustrated. they were angry. they felt this was completely unnecessary given the fact that every concession they had requested had been met and this was not a matter of policy, this was just about personality
house floor. he has lost 20 so far. those in the camp of 20 are pushing,s pushing hard to blow the number. they believe they can get up to 20, 25 republicans to vote against him and ultimately get mccarthy to get out of the race. mccarthy told me he is not going anywhere, dig in, force the opponents to wear themselves out and essentially concede, give him the speedership. he believes he s given them enough concessions. they want more power in the incoming republican congress. that, he says, is plenty of concessions going forward. that s still not enough for some of the members. there are ore issues he simply can t resolve. personality conflicts. some people simply want him out of the race altogether and say that they will vote against him for however long be it takes. so all of this is happening as democrats on the other side are sitting back, watching this happening. not planning at the moment to bail kevin mccarthy out in any way as he struggles to try to
he has handled the negotiations. others have personality conflicts with kevin mccarthy. all raises concerns for mc mccarthy, analyzing whether he can get the 218 votes to be elected speaker. there is a plan in the morning on wednesday to have a meeting of the full republican conference to try to hash out the differences. the problem, they had a meeting on tuesday morning that did not go well for mccarthy. in a meeting he went after the members, lashed out after the critics. one of his allies suggested that some of them could lose committee assignments over the whole issue. that almost led to republican opposition hardening in some ways, growing. that was what the conservatives who have sought to derail mccarthy s bid said. they came out of the meeting and were emboldened and planned to oppose him. at the moment mccarthy says he plans to grind it out, go to a fourth ballot, go to a fifth
personality conflicts, bitching and moaning from folks who don t have vision. reporter: the frustration is that 95% of the conference is there backing kevin mccarthy. there s a small fraction of folks who are standing opposed to him still this morning. it may not matter because he only has that small majority. he can only afford to lose four votes. like we noted, he had a lot more members still on the fence. lauren fox, appreciate it. thank you. joining us to discuss further elena trini and nicholas wu. you have 95% of the conference there, but this vocal 5%, for some of it it s personal, they don t like kevin mccarthy. for others it s about the concessions. there s been so much that s been given up by kevin mccarthy at this point.
