A year soon scarred by social and political upheaval: The assassination of Malcolm X. Bloody Sunday. The Vietnam War. The Watts Riots.  Jimmie Lee Jackson would see none of it. The 26-year-old showed up the night of Feb. 18 in Marion, Alabama, where hundreds of people had gathered to march in protest of the arrest of a local civil rights activist. When police and state troopers intervened to break up the march, the scene outside Zion United Methodist Church turned violent.

National Day of Prayer observed in Southern Illinois Unmute PERRY COUNTY (WSIL) Thursday is National Day of Prayer, it s observed across the US each year, and after having to cancel in 2020 because of the pandemic, this year the remembrance has special meaning for people in our region. Almost one dozen people gathered at the Perry County Court House Thursday afternoon taking time to pray for healing, and celebrate in the prospect of more people returning to church after a year at home. Last year we got robbed because they had everybody locked up, the church has been on lockdown, says George Culley, Founder of Least Of The Brethren Food Pantry. But the good news, His truth shall go marching on, like the Battle Hymn Republic.

Perry County continues to clean up during ice, snow storms

Submitted photo Following the U.S. National Weather Service of Jackson’s announcement of an anticipated significant ice storm for most of Eastern Kentucky last week, several communities in Hazard and Perry County have continued to see weather-related issues surrounding ice and snow storms that continued to impact the county into this week. These impacts include power outages, tree damage and treacherous travel conditions. Jerry Wayne Stacy, the Perry County Emergency Management director, said that the largest concern for local officials at the moment is the downed trees.

Cappawana (John). A 1967 graduate of Susquenita High School, he was known for his dancing skills, playing football, driving fast, getting in scraps, and being the life of the party both in and out of class. There were few teachers who considered him a joy to have in class. He was a member of IBEW LU 143, serving a four-year apprenticeship and retiring from the trade. He was looked to by many for his knowledge and leadership skills on the job.
