As a child, Percy Farwell would sit in the international lounge at the Gander International Airport and watch people pass by.
Farwell wondered where they were coming from or going on his perch near Arthur Price’s Wandering Birds’ sculpture in the centre of the lounge.
He and his friends were regulars at the airport. On many summer days, they’d hop on their bikes and head for the lounge.

Gander hit hard by pandemic aviation losses

To say the aviation industry in Gander has taken a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic would be an understatement.
Since the pandemic took hold last March, the central Newfoundland town has seen airlines pull out of the Gander International Airport, followed by considerable job losses.
At peak times, the airport sees flights from various parts of Canada and the world.
In a news release Thursday morning, the town indicated the aviation sector in Gander has seen 290 jobs lost, which accounts for $25 million in lost wages for people in the town and the surrounding area.

Newfoundland and Labrador is reporting no new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, its third straight day with zero, and a new recovery.
There are now three active cases the lowest caseload since Nov. 4 with one of those in hospital.
The potential for increased spread over the holidays had been a concern for health and government officials heading into December. On Wednesday, just under two weeks after New Year s Eve, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald thanked people who adhered to public health guidelines at the end of a tumultuous year.

Gander, Newfoundland held its own services Saturday to honor Fort Campbell’s 248 soldiers and the eight crew members who died in a plane crash shortly after takeoff from their airport 35 years ago.
Percy Farwell is the mayor of Gander and says the 101st Airborne Division’s brush with his town was supposed to be brief that morning until tragedy struck.
