To say the aviation industry in Gander has taken a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic would be an understatement.
Since the pandemic took hold last March, the central Newfoundland town has seen airlines pull out of the Gander International Airport, followed by considerable job losses.
At peak times, the airport sees flights from various parts of Canada and the world.
In a news release Thursday morning, the town indicated the aviation sector in Gander has seen 290 jobs lost, which accounts for $25 million in lost wages for people in the town and the surrounding area.

As a result of recent cuts at Gander International Airport, the town s chamber of commerce says that nearly 300 aviation jobs have been lost, and it s calling on the federal government for help for the industry.
While the number of jobs lost appears shocking, Hannah de Young, first vice-chair of the Gander and Area Chamber of Commerce, says it s just the tip of the iceberg.
