villages, particularly with the populations that are close to the dike areas, are being evacuated. and so sam, while we re seeing there, you know, and apprecia appreciating the orchard, i wonder what the residents nearby are thinking when they look at those images of buildings and homes that were simply washed away. you know, with the kind of breadth and vigor of the water, how are they preparing themselves for the potential like that? you know, repeating itself? are they getting out of town? i mean, just hoping those sandbags are going to help the structures? reporter: a lot of volunteers that we ve seen, people volunteering, villages themselves, it s not just the military that are carrying out these protection operations. ordinary people have been banding together to protect their dikes. they are lucky because they don t anticipate this rushing flash floods that hit very often hillside towns or towns that were designed to have a drainage system for a very small stream
thousands of people volunteering, stopping anything they were doing at the time to go out on these searches off the main road looking for a clue, any clue that could give authorities some place to look for her. after 3,500 tips that poured into this department, they had no idea where jayme was. somehow she made her way out of that house where she d been held captive we presume for the entirety of this search about an hour s north of here in gordon. all the superlatives that are in webster s dictionary will be used going forward because so many of these cases sadly do not end this way, with a happy bit of news. that is certainly what people are waking up to this morning, went to bed last night. this is the suspect. this image will be going out visually to the media here in just a bit. this is the 21-year-old who was arrested and will be charged in this case, jake patterson.
hold the senate and maybe grow their majority slightly. the house is a totally different story. bash ra comstock, she s very likely to lose right now, because that is not a district that likes trump, and so she s had to toe this delicate line. a lot of republicans are in that position. real quickly, any concerns about placcomplacency. people who had some thought about their vote not mattering, that s not a thought people are having today. i think people realize what s at stake in terms of casting their ballots, but seeing the level the activism and engagement in terms of people volunteering, going out trying to get the vote out in addition to casting their own single ballot. that s what i ve been watching. we saw the women s march, and a lot of folks asked me will this
governor abbott has run a great operation. locals have done an amazing job, and we ve also just had an amazing outpouring of people volunteering, people risking their lives to save other people. despite the stuff i have to deal with, the price gouging and the fraud and some looting, we have more people that are doing good than we can even count. we cannot measure the number of people that have been saved by volunteers. thank you, thank you both. thank you councilman nick long and attorney general paxton. before we go to break, find a charity, say team rubicon that is actually doing cleanup work. send some help. team rubicon sends former members of the army, navy, air force and marine corps who have left the service. they came together after the earthquake in haiti and now they go wherever the bugle calls.
to see them smile. they re bringing in small children and things like that. being able to help them be safe and get dry is all that matters. reporter: any idea how long it s going to go into the night? until they say we re wrapping it up, we re staying. we re here to help. reporter: that s how people have been helping out. right here at the convention center, there are people from all walks of life. there are people who live in downtown houston and there s even a woman from spain on vacation. she got stuck in houston on a layover. her plane would not take up for europe so she s here. i talked to her a while ago. this is her right here. she doesn t speak english, but she s been helping out, because she s stranded here and just wanted to be a part of this. absolutely incredible, those accounts there of people volunteering. i was wondering from your time there and the numbers you were
