The Gainesville Sun
Save the trees
With more and more high-rises like The Standard popping up around Gainesville, it s time for us as a community to get back to the greenery that made Gainesville such a welcoming place to be. Tearing down trees for dense development is immensely damaging to the environment, and one only needs to look at the flooding of Williston Road and 34th Street to see just how harmful mass removal of trees can be.
I m no stranger to the world of development. Laying bricks and stone is what allowed me to retire from New York, and I ve seen firsthand how a landscape of brick walls can hurt a community. If we really want Gainesville to be an environmental leader, then making drastic changes is needed.
