A North Carolina high school refused to give a student his diploma Thursday because he wore a Mexican flag over his gown at graduation.
Ever Lopez was walking at Asheboro High School’s graduation and received a diploma holder, but the principal never handed over the actual diploma. Video of the incident was shared widely on Twitter and TikTok.
“I just gotta represent,” Lopez told the Asheboro Courier-Tribune. “I did it for my family. They came over here to give me a better future.”
The school said the diploma was withheld because Lopez violated its dress code.
Ever Lopez can be seen in footage crossing the podium at Asheboro High School while wearing the flag before pausing as he is spoken to by school principal Penny Crooks.
Ever Lopez said he wanted to represent his Mexican roots as he graduated from high school in Asheboro, N.C. The school said the flag violated the ceremony’s dress code.
