Emergency responders arrived just before 2:30 a.m. for a report of a smoke detector activation from the B building. They found smoke and began evacuating residents. Caldwell was found in her downstairs apartment, where the fire was primarily focused. She died of smoke and soot inhalation and the manner of death was ruled accidental, according to Pennsville Police Chief Vince Green. Caldwell was alone and no other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined, but officials are awaiting a final report from the state fire marshal’s office, Green said.
