Calls to find a solution as speeding problem persists in Haddington

A CALL has been made to find a solution to the problem of speeding drivers throughout Haddington. A widespread 20mph limit was temporarily introduced in the town last year on the heels of the coronavirus pandemic. However, there have been repeated criticisms of the blanket speed limit, as well as complaints about people exceeding the lowered limit. The town’s community council discussed what could be done to address the issue and whether members had any thoughts on what measures might prove successful. Ideas included an increase in the number of signs highlighting the speed limit, the introduction of speed bumps and use of driver feedback signs, which display the speed of an approaching vehicle.

Speed checks to be carried out on various roads in Haddington

SPEED checks will be carried out at a number of locations throughout Haddington in the coming weeks. Police have been using pop-up ‘officers’ at a variety of locations, including Haldane Avenue, West Road and Pencaitland Road, in a bid to influence driver behaviour. A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “These have proven useful in deterring speeding and will be used in conjunction with real-time speed checks in the coming weeks. “Drivers found to be exceeding the posted speed limit could be issued a fixed penalty ticket or reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Tackling speeding on Haddington s Pencaitland Road a priority

Local officers have been out on Pencaitland Road after complaints about speeding were brought to their attention. A spokesman for Police Scotland said they would continue to address the issue. He said: “So far, a number of drivers have been warned in line with the Lord Advocate’s Guidelines; one driver was issued with a fixed penalty ticket and another will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal for road traffic offences. “We will continue to monitor this area and ask that all drivers adhere to the speed limits.”
