Ma’Khia’s foster mother Angela Moore, who wasn’t home at the time, said the dispute stemmed from an argument over a messy house and an unmade bed between Ma’Khia and some of Moore’s former foster children who had come to the house to throw Moore a birthday party. At least two of the women involved in the altercation were adults ages 20 and 22, according to a police report.

Almost immediately, enraged protestors gathered outside police headquarters. Say Her Name! they chanted. The N ew York Times reported that the girl s grieving mother, Paula Bryant, had told WBNS that her daughter was a very loving, peaceful little girl. In an attempt to correct a tendentious version of events immediately promoted by civil rights attorney Ben Crump (and uncritically repeated by the Times) in which the young victim was described as unarmed, the Columbus police department took the unusual step of

Ma Khia Bryant s death, court records, raise questions about family, system s custody

Ma Khia Bryant was 13 years old when Columbus police removed her and three siblings from their mother s home and placed them in the emergency care of Franklin County Children Services in March 2018. Three years and one month later, on April 20, Ma Khia was still in the agency s custody when a Columbus police officer fatally shot her outside the foster home where she lived in the 3100 block of Legion Lane on the Far East Side. The initial reaction to the death of the 16-year-old girl was outrage among community members who have grown weary of police killings of Black people. But in the days since the shooting, attention increasingly has turned to questions and allegations regarding the child welfare system, specifically Ohio s foster-care system, and whether it played a role in the tragedy.

Share and speak up for justice, law & order. Over time, since first sending journalists to Saigon in or about 1964, such as NBC’s Garrick Utley, foreign wars in which America has had boots on the ground have increasingly become an intimate part of our lives here, stateside.[i] We have become accustomed to the macabre, unsanitized reality that is military conflict. During the last 50-plus years, television and advances in video technology have served to personalize what was once a remote story of failure or success, victory or defeat. Now we are subjected to the gruesome images of dead children mangled by the explosive blast of a nearby bomb hit. We witness in real-time the emaciated faces of prisoners or the displaced, and we see the destruction of whole cities after a scorched-earth campaign. War is no longer simply a feel-good nationalist inspiration that underscores the power of your country’s defense system: It is real! It is in your face. It has palpable consequences.

Mother of Ma Khia Bryant speaks at Saturday rally

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Rallies in the wake of Ma’Khia Bryant’s death continued Saturday as a crowd gathered on the steps of City Hall to decry police brutality and demand change while listening to a host of speakers, including the girl s mother, Paula Bryant. Bryant described her daughter — a 16-year-old who was shot and killed by a Columbus police officer on April 20 — as an honor roll student who loved the color blue and TikTok hairstyle videos. She had a great sense of humor and was kind to anyone she met, she said. “She had a beautiful smile, was loving and had a beautiful personality,” she told those gathered, many of whom wore neon butterfly hair clips in honor of Ma’Khia. “She was a protector and had a motherly spirit about her.”
