congressman morten griffith of virginia. he s a member of the house freedom caucus. thank you for joining us. you ve been of the two most important meetings of the night. the meeting of the full group of house republicans with paul ryan and then later a freedom caucus meeting. let s start with the meeting with paul ryan. did you leave that meeting ready to support paul ryan as speaker? well, this is an important decision not only for the house and congress. and while i heard some interesting things about paul ands i thought were important, i want to sleep on it. give it time to consider mature consideration. certainly paul said some very good things and i appreciate that. i do need to sleep on it. i used to tell clients when i was practicing law, go home and sleep on that before you make a final decision. that s what i m going to do this evening. how did the discussion go in the freedom caucus meeting after the paul ryan meeting.
them to say what some of us would consider outrageous and it doesn t seem to have an effect. let s move on to paul ryan who says he s willing to step up for the speaker job. the void being left by john boehner. there s a few catches here with the house republican conference. congressman ryan laid out the terms on which he ll be willing to serve as speaker. ryan said he s not interested in the job and told his republican colleagues he s willing to serve. but only if the caucus united behind him by friday and he has a few other requests. first, we need to move from an opposition party to being a proposition party. we need to update house rules and make sure we do not experience constant leadership challenges and crisis. third, we as a conference should unify now and not after a
minority parties, amendments in the house of representatives? i think if to you open up that amendment process for members in general, that would include the minority party. and i think that s part of this. whether that s run of the rules that ultimately gets changed, that s yet to be seen, but i do think it s a process that would be fair for all party, whether they happen to be members of the democrat party, independents or republicans. and what about the so called hastert rule, which was really a practice, not so much a rule, in which a republican speaker should not bring anything to a vote that doesn t already have a majority of the republican caucus voting for it. is that something you re going to demand from paul ryan. we definitely want to make sure there s more conference discussions whether we can find out if there s a majority of conference members before it
