Due to COVID-19 in-person gathering restrictions, spectators were not allowed to watch the ceremony. Nelson Mayor and Chair of Police Board John Dooley, conducted the Change of Command swearing-in ceremony for Chief Fisher, who replaced retiring Nelson Police Department Chief Constable Paul Burkart.

Cold in the Koots fundraiser nets more than $10,000 for BC Special Olympics

Local Chiefs from the various first responder units in Nelson went over and above the call of duty Saturday morning at Lakeside Park to raise more than $10,000 for BC Special Olympics as part of the BC FreezinforaReason Campaign. Led by retiring Nelson Police Chief Paul Burkart, the cast, including Nelson Fire Chief Len MacCharles, Chief Deb Morris of BC Ambulance Services and Regional District of Central Kootenay Regional Fire Chief Nora Hannon, raised $10,300 during the Cold in the Koots fundraiser.

After 20 years of service, retiring Nelson Police Chief Constable Paul Burkart is going out in style. The Chief Constable is being sent off into the frigid waters of Kootenay Lake from the end of the Hall Street dock as Burkart, takes the plunge to raise money for BC Special Olympics FreezinforaReason Campaign with the Cold in the Koots fundraiser. Burkart, who will be replaced next month by incoming NPD Chief Constable Donovan Fisher, is being joined by Chief Len MacCharles of Nelson Fire Rescue Services and Chief Deb Morris of BC Ambulance Services.
