The BP gas station at 350 N. Hunt Club Road will be the first in Gurnee to sell alcohol after the village board voted 4-2 this week to issue the business a liquor license.
A small but wildly popular suburban craft meadery whose bottles of mead typically sell out online within a matter of hours received permission this week to open a tap room in Gurnee. Pips Meadery will operate in a space currently used by Only Child Brewery at 1350 Tri State Parkway.
The small business grant program launched by the village of Gurnee last month already has attracted 17 qualified applicants requesting nearly half of the $250,000 allotted for the program.

The Gurnee village board has approved a $95,472 contract to demolish two commercial buildings in the Des Plaines River floodplain that housed a Dairy Queen, a spa and a vacuum repair business on Old Grand Avenue.
The village purchased the buildings in April 2020 for $275,000 with the intention of knocking them down and removing the surrounding pavement. The buildings to be demolished are at 4609 through 4625 Old Grand Ave.

In her final act as Gurnee s mayor, Kristina Kovarik thanked the village staff, residents, community partners, fellow elected officials and her family and friends who supported her during her 16-year tenure in the village s top job. Every day for the last 16 years I woke up with a ton of gratefulness and thankfulness to have been given the privilege and trust to lead Gurnee, Kovarik said. I thrived on the constant challenges, and as a team we rose and exceeded expectations on our common goals and purpose.
