In the U.S., 2,500 students were chosen to receive the $2,500 scholarship from a pool of about 16,000 finalists, according to a press release. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors. Herrin was selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who reviewed applications submitted by both the finalists and their high schools. Students submitted academic records, Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores, a personal essay, their contributions and leadership to school and community activities and a recommendation written by a high school official.
