Lorraine s Lowdown: He ain t lion about COVID

By Lorraine Jewett | Special to The Union Pat Warner Has Lived Here Since 1988, and he appreciates our town’s idiosyncrasies. Pat recalls when flashlights put GeeVee in the national spotlight. “Back in ’98 I turned on the TV late one night and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno was on so I gave it a watch,” recalls Pat. “Imagine my surprise when he was right in the middle of a regular segment in which he showed actual newspaper clips of local police blotters and our very own blotter from The Union was featured. It was something like, ‘A caller in Grass Valley reported seeing an abandoned car without headlights that had two flashlights duct-taped to the hood and two taped to the roof.’ The audience went nuts! All I could think was, ‘Yep, that’s our town…’”

Lorraine s Lowdown: It s a fair cleanup

By Lorraine Jewett | Special to The Union Show Our Fairgrounds Some Love. After a year without events and less staff on board due to pandemic-related layoffs, California’s Most Beautiful Fairgrounds needs some spring cleaning. An enthusiastic group of NevCo Fair lovers is planning a May 1 work day. “Excitement is over the top for this project,” says committee member Debbie Prisk Olsen. “The scope of work is daunting, but we can do this!” Individuals, families, service organizations, nonprofits, high school students and everyone willing to roll up their sleeves are invited to trim flowers and bushes, spread compost, prep lawns for mowing, pressure wash and paint structures, whack weeds, rake pine needles, and pick up pine cones, sticks and trash (monetary donations also accepted). The plan is to organize two four-hour shifts: 8 a.m. to noon and noon to 4 p.m. Volunteers are asked to sign up by completing a form at http://www.NevadaCountyFair.com

Fairgrounds Foundation makes $100,000 donation

Submitted by Wendy Oaks The Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation made a generous donation of $100,000 to the Nevada County Fairgrounds and will begin a membership drive for 2021 to continue raising much-needed funds for the Nevada County Fairgrounds. The donation comes during a year when COVID-19 restrictions on events and gatherings have financially devastated the Nevada County Fairgrounds. With the cancellation of the annual Fair, the Draft Horse Classic, Country Christmas Faire, music festivals and more than a hundred events on the grounds, revenue at the Fairgrounds has been severely impacted. The Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation was established in 2005 to fulfill the mission of “building a better Nevada County Fairgrounds through fundraising and contributions to the Fairgrounds.”
