Punjab ex-minister Satwant Kaur dies of Covid-19 | Ludhiana News

PATIALA: Senior Akali leader, five-time legislator of Chamkaur Sahib, and twice Punjab cabinet minister, Satwant Kaur Sandhu, died at a private hospital in Mohali on Friday night after a fortnight of fighting Covid-19. She was 80. She had first served as a minister for social welfare and public health, while from 2000 to 2002, held the charge of grievances and pensions, youth services, and printing and stationery. She would have turned 81 on February 22. Her son, Harmohan Singh Sandhu, who quit as AIG to join the Shiromani Akali Dal in 2019, said: “My mother was in public life since 1975. She was now chairperson of the party’s women’s and Scheduled Caste wings. In 1987, she was chairperson of Punjab Leather Corporation.”

Representative image PATIALA: Farmers have announced to gherao Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) employees if they come to install smart meters in their villages. In some villages, farmer unions have also got made a similar announcement. PSPCL has around 95 lakh power consumers and it was planning to install 96,000 meters in urban and rural areas of the state as a pilot project. The officials claimed that the installation work started a few days ago. Given the privatisation of electricity, farmer unions in Punjab allege a deep rooted conspiracy behind installation of digital smart meters. Representative image PATIALA: Punjabi singer and lyricist Pawandeep, also known as Shree Brar, was arrested by CIA staff of Patiala from Mohali on Tuesday for allegedly glorifying violence in his song. The singer has come out with provocative lyrics, promoting violence and anti-social acts to the extent of glorifying lawlessness in his song ‘Jaan’ launched around a month ago, police officials said. Brar, who hails from Silwala Khurd village of Hanumangarh district in Rajasthan, had also got much publicity for his recent song ‘Kisaan Anthem’ sung in favour of agitating farmers at Delhi borders. A case was registered against him under Police Incitement to Disaffection Act, 1922, and IPC at Civil Lines Police Station Patiala on January 3.
