LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- The Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration are working with migrants at the southern border.
Its one thing to read about an event or watch it on TV, and another to see it in person. “Heaviness of the reality of what’s going on here”, says Sister Rose Elsbernd.
The Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration are answering an emergency call from Catholic Charities to help care for the growing number of families and children seeking asylum at the southern border. “Lots of children, children under the age of seven”, says Elsbernd.
The team is providing medical care, distributing clothing and meals, and learning all they can about what’s happening and why. “And help people understand that they are human. They just want to have a safe good life”, says FSPA Justice and Peace Promoter Pat Ruda.

In the spirit of the FSPA provocative movement to build bridges of relationships that stretch us to be people of encounter who stand with all suffering in our Earth Community, and educating ourselves on the intersection of climate crisis, racism, and migration, the FSPA Encuentro@TheBorder group has commissioned a team to respond to an emergency call from Catholic Charities.
According to the request received via the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, “. the 19 Catholic Charities border sites in California, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona are all facing the challenges of caring for many families and children. The specific points of entry are fluid. As of now, Laredo, McAllen, Tucson, Yuma, San Antonio, and San Diego are facing significant numbers of arrivals, but that can change tomorrow. Currently, the most urgent needs are volunteers who speak Spanish and financial aid to buy clothes for the children.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) Members of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration are answering an emergency call for help at the southern border. A team of five is headed to Arizona to volunteer at a center for immigrants.
Of all the bags that pass through the La Crosse Regional Airport, few are packed for a journey of faith. “For any of us sisters I think it’s a response and call, and something you feel in your heart for folks,” says Sister Theresa Keller.
