After coming off an undefeated 2020 season, expectations were high for the Orange this season. They didn’t add offensive powers like Duke’s Michael Sowers and Brennan O’Neill, but they returned eight All-Americans. It was good enough to be named Atlantic Coast Conference favorites in the preseason coaches poll.
A season-opening loss to Army shattered those expectations and a blowout win against then-No. 2 Virginia built them back up. Through seven games just over half the season Syracuse (4-3, 1-2 ACC) continues to tear down and then restore the hype surrounding a program that hasn’t won a national championship since 2009.

Brendan Curry reads defenses like they’re “dealing cards face up.”
That’s how Curry’s high school coach describes the All-American’s abilities. Curry always knows where his five offensive teammates are and where they’re going to be. He can dish the ball from the invert at X, from the top of the box and from the wings. He can feed from anywhere because he’s “the smartest player on the field,” said Torre Kasemeyer, Calvert Hall (Maryland) High School’s offensive coordinator and Curry’s current shooting coach.

Brendan Curry dodged from X, and as he did most of the night, created separation. He then found Stephen Rehfuss open on the crease, who slammed home his third goal of the game.
The goal, and the way it was created, was indicative of the dominant performance No. 12 Syracuse delivered one that should hopefully quell the doubts of the Orange faithful, at least for a week.
A week after a disappointing season-opening home loss to Army, Syracuse (1-1) returned to the Carrier Dome and found their rhythm in a 20-10 win over No. 3 Virginia (3-1). “THAT is Syracuse lacrosse,” the team’s twitter account proclaimed after the victory.
