The ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS) has joined with Rights & Inclusion Australia to welcome the ACT Government’s decision to support the inclusion of mandatory provisions for Universal Design in the National Construction Code (NCC). The two organisations believe this is a great opportunity for the Australian Government to demonstrate leadership and make a positive response to the findings of the Aged Care Royal Commission by ensuring that future housing can sustain people into old age, as well as provide an adequate stock of accessible housing for people with disability across Australia.

CHIEF Minister Andrew Barr has changed his opposing view on the ACT Greens’ pre-election proposal to phase out natural gas by 2040.
It was a proposal that Mr Barr labelled as “crazy” in September, a month before six Greens members were voted into the ACT Legislative Assembly, three of which have now taken up ministerial positions in the Labor/Greens government.
Despite Mr Barr’s opposing views at the time, “we are not going to be gas-shaming people”, he had said, Housing Minister Yvette Berry yesterday (April 7) announced no new suburbs in Canberra will be connected to gas.

Madam Speaker, the Greens have in the past made the point that every budget, now, needs to be a climate budget. We know that declaring a climate emergency wasn’t theoretical but is driving us to further urgent action.
This budget has climate action as its headline, and delivers climate responses – not just in the obvious ways, either, but in the broadest interpretation. This is a significant and positive change. The Greens took the platform of a Building a Better Normal to the election, and as you can see with six MLAs here today, many people in Canberra chose that Better Normal. This budget is one of the first clear steps towards that.
