worst of the disaster early this tuesday, may 24, 2011. captioning funded by cbs good morning, welcome to joplin, missouri. welcome to the early show here on a tuesday morning, i m chris wragge, erica hill is in new york. the scene echoes as far as the eye can see. this is massive devastation. the tornado leveling one-third of the city and the scene has played out as far as the eye can see. entire developments have been wiped out. we re going to give you an update on the situation here. we re going to speak with the governor, the mayor, the director of fema as we continue to update the numbers here, the death toll, and the people missing in the massive, massive devastation from the ef-4 tornado. erica? with the folks on the ground, sharing their personal stories as well. we want to know this tragedy this, devastation is making an impact not just in the u.s. but across the ocean as well. president obama is in london but he s focused on the disaster here at home speaking

those pictures and that sound give you a very good idea of just what people in japan are dealing with this morning. those shots, of course, of the magnitude 8.9 quake which hit just about 2:46 local time. the images, as you can see, are devastating. and that quake triggered a tsunami. some waves reported as high as 30 feet high, and that wall of mud just sweeping away everything in its path right now. the death toll in the area is on the rise. buildings in tokyo, which are currently on fire right now, 4 million buildings in the region without power. so this is a devastating situation that we re watching unfold minute by minute right now. indeed we are. you imagine tokyo is about 230 miles south of the city closest to where this earthquake hit. that is really making its way through japan. we want to get youed very latest this morning. we do want to start in japan where the country is in chaos. this is the biggest earthquake to hit there in at least 140 years. as chris ment
now that auto body shop was majestic auto repair. they are not authorized by the city to tow any vehicles after car accidents. federal authorities led the officers would respond to a car accident and convince car owners to be picked up and be repaired by majestic. majestic is not authorized by the city. officers were all told to show up at the police academy to have equipment inspection. when they arrived, the fbi was present. i personally took the badges from every officer arrested. reporter: now the authorities are going to be releasing more details in the weeks to come. meanwhile all 15 of the 17 officers who had been arrested are expected to have court hearings today. two of the officers were not arrested this morning. they were on a scheduled leave. police say they will be arrested very soon. all of the officers who had been arrested have been stripped of their badges. mayor blake just released a statement on the arrest. it says in part i expect all city employee
