Thats a rise of almost 1,200 in five weeks. Around half of those are cases linked to this summers riots. In a few days time, the governments temporary early Release Scheme will begin, and some offenders will be able to leave jail at an earlier point in their sentences. Its the longest Prison Sentence that has been handed down so far after the wave of riots that swept parts of england and Northern Ireland last month. 27 year old Thomas Birley from rotherham has been sent to jail for nine years after helping to set fire to a Hotel Housing Asylum seekers in the town and attacking Police Officers in august. The judge told Thomas Birley, you were a leading participant in an ignorant, racist attempt at mob rule. From sheffield, heres danny savage.
