hurricane ian. 65 people here in florida did not survive the storm. search and rescue efforts in many areas are ongoing. 2 million people in multiple states are without power. the sunshine here revealing more and more damage, hour-by-hour. the hurricane and storm surge laid waste to entire towns, including ft. myers beach, robbing people of homes and livelihoods. rescue efforts will take months and years for some of the areas to get back to normal. i tell you for myself, i spent much of the day out there. that is the case. it will take many months and weeks to get back to normal. south of here, naples, florida, officials say it will take months or longer to recover. prosecute damage could top $2 million. the fire chief says the city is having challenges with restoring power. brian todd is in naples for us. brian, i know you ve been doing this hour after hour. every corner you turn, every street you go down, you re seeing more and more devastation. tell us what you re seeing.
unrecognizable landmarks. and it also store up ft. myers beach. we went on a boat ride with the cajun navy and other volunteer rescuers across the area. and matt lachey in the coastal area is where most of the deaths occurred. what is going on over here? a lot of restaurants, into the lot of homes. pretty much all restaurants. theme that do shrimping, fishing. there was buildings the whole way. and they are just gone. you heard their stories that there are bodies in some of the canals and stuff? yeah, like up to the second story window, the water was still going. and that is the road right there. yeah. and it is gone. yeah. this area is pretty typical of the destruction around here. there is a bridge intact just about a block from here. maybe a quarter of a mile, nothing more than that, but the road leading to that bridge is completely washed out. so the island that is on the other side of that bridge is cut off right now. the people texted me hey, your ho
still quite dangerous. rescue crews are looking for survivors now five days later and the death toll is climbing. officials have confirmed 76 people have died. most in lee county where ian stormed ashore as a category 4. it is feared there had be more victims. now the power is slowly being restored in florida. more than 6,000 homes and businesses still in the dark this morning and it could be months before many are back on the grid. many don t have clean tap water, that makes the overwhelming task of rebuilding that much harder. and now officials in lee county are facing questions about why the first mandatory evacuations weren t ordered until a day before landfall despite a plan that said evacuations should have happened earlier. governor ron desantis defending their actions. they informed people, and most people didn t want to do it. are you going to grab somebody out of their home that doesn t want to? i don t think that s the appropriate use of government. florida res
