Mysore/Mysuru: The special Panchalinga Darshana at Talakad in T. Narasipur taluk of Mysuru district got off to a virtual start early this morning with the performance of Mahapuja, Mahabhisheka and other rituals associated with ten-day Panchalinga Darshana Mahotsava, in the presence of District Minister S.T. Somashekar and a host of officials. The Panchalinga Darshana takes place in the years where five Shravana Saturdays and five Karthika Mondays fall. The last Panchalinga Darshana at Talakad was held in 2013.

Panchalinga Darshana: Special rituals conducted at Talakad temples

Mahotsava confined to the local devotees in view of the COVID-19 pandemic The main event as part of Panchalinga Darshana Mahotsava was held at Talakad in the early hours of Monday amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mahotsava, which happens once in few years, is under way since December 10 and concludes on December 19. Amid the special rituals and Abhishekas at the five temples in and around Talakad that constitute the Panchalingas – Sri Vaidyanatheshwara, Sri Arkanatheshwara, Sri Pathaleshwara, Sri Maraleshwara, and Mudukuthore Sri Mallikarjunaswamy– began as early as 4.30 a.m. and went on till 7.30 a.m. The ten-day Panchalinga Darshana Mahotsava got off to a start on December 10 and the main event happened on the last Monday of the ‘Karthika’ season which is considered to be auspicious.

Conducted as per the Hindu almanac based on astrological calculations it is not an annual event and the gap between the two editions tend to vary from 3 to 12 years. The previous Panchalinga Darshana was conducted in 2013. But being held amidst the pandemic and the imperatives of minimising public gathering, the district administration has restricted the event only to the local populace. The event entails the devout to have darshan of all the five Shivalingas in the region – Sri Vaidyanatheshwara, Sri Maruleshwara, Mudukothore Sri Malliakarjunaswamy, Sri Pathaleshwara and Sri Arakeshwara – on the same day.
