Constantly encouraging her to “have a Plan B”, he’s never even watched one of her creations the whole way through. Around my house, the weekend doesnât start until we kick things off with Friday family movie night. When I wrote about the stacked
The Mitchells vs. the Machines cast just before the movie debuted on Netflix, I had a feeling it would be a great addition to our long list of movies on this grand cinematic adventure as a family.
Little did I know that
The Mitchells vs. the Machines would become an immediate and resounding hit with every member of my family (yes, even my 16-month-old), one that had us laughing, crying (at least some of us, anyway), and smiling ear-to-ear as we were all filled with joy and wonder. As the weekend went on, I couldnât help but think about all the reasons why this animated movie about the Mitchells trying to save humanity while also figuring out what it means to be family is so great, and why itâs the perfect addition to the family movie night rotation.

A barely functional family becomes humanity s last hope when a robot apocalypse led by evil Olivia Colman interrupts their road trip in this Sony Animation feature, premiering on Netflix.
A lot of primo animation talent is assembled for
The Mitchells vs. the Machines, including producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who were behind
The Lego Movie and
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and writer-directors Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe, late of the popular Disney Channel toon series
Gravity Falls. Their fast-paced fantasy adventure involves an ordinary family tasked with singlehandedly halting a robot apocalypse that threatens to wipe out humanity. It sounds even better when you learn that the A.I. uprising is led by Olivia Colman as the voice of a spurned smartphone digital assistant, with a Furby army at her command.
