Wauneta E. Stevens-Ortez, 96, went home to her Lord on November 18, 2023. She had fought a long and valiant battle with Alzheimer’s. She was the child of Richard U. Stevens and Ellen Pearl (Pinkerton) Stevens. Richard has descendants going back to the Mayflower. Pearl, as she liked to be called, has descendants going back to the Salem Witch Trials and beyond. Wauneta secretly married Pierre Ortez December 28, 1946, in a small Church in Minneapolis, MN. Pierre became MIA in French Indochina in 1954. Wauneta was one of the first airline stewardesses (and hence the secret marriage) having flown with Braniff, Cordova, and Pacific Northern Airlines (which became Delta) stationed out of Anchorage, Alaska for ten years. She proudly talked about living through several hard landings. After her career with air travel, and while still living in Alaska, she worked for Providence Hospital, sold Minnesota woolens, and was the caretaker of the Alaska Art Tile Building. Elise Marie vonScheele Campbell, fondly called Corky by all, passed away peacefully into the care of her Lord and Savior in Honolulu on March 7, 2021, at the age of 80. She was born in the Alutiiq village Afognak, Alaska, on July 4, 1940, to Herman and Marie Loe vonScheele.
The family moved to Seattle in 1942, where Corky grew up on Seattleâs Queen Anne Hill. Ever charismatic, Corky was chosen to be a Seafair Princess in 1958 and afterward she attended the University of Washington and Everett Junior College. After school, Corky trained to become a flight attendant and worked for Pacific Northern Airlines and Northwest Orient Airlines as a flight attendant and then trainer, accumulating over 38 yearsâ service before her retirement in 2000. Traveling was a passion of Corkyâs and her time as a flight attendant allowed her to travel the world; her favorite destinations were to Osaka, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea, where she fell in love with the Asian arts and culture.
