recounts are under way in florida with a thursday deadline with election officials furiously counting ballots in the hotly contested senate and governors races as both sides file lawsuits. griff jenkins is watching it all in florida. reporter: that s right. 65 of florida s 67 counties are well on their way to a recount. although palm beach county and here in broward, it s taken a little longer. let me show you what we re looking at. 199,000 of roughly 715,000 ballots have been recounted. they sort of separated them into early voting, day of voting and mail-ins. going to continue this afternoon, probably wrap up tonight. we ll see where they are when that deadline fast approaches which is 3:00 p.m. thursday to get a final tally in. what you re seeing on top of the machines, real important, is the undervote and overvote. they either mark too little or too much on the governor, senate
stopped. they re in the process of certifying their final tabulations. they re going to send those to the secretary of state s office, as are 66 other counties in florida that have to do that by thursday at 3:00 p.m. what happens next is important. behind me there s a cage of boxes of ballots with a yellow sticker on them. here in leon county, that s how they re delineating where those over and under votes are. a quick update on what an over an under vote are. an over vote, that machine doesn t necessarily pick up who you picked in that race. maybe you checked more than one box or maybe you picked the wrong box, xed it out. that s an over vote. that s going to come out in the hand recount. an under vote is something similar. maybe you didn t fill in the bubble, didn t fill in the ballot the way the machine needed it to, to pick up what that mark was. maybe you checked it or did an arrow or something else. maybe you wrote in the
county, they say they ll be able to get to that deadline. however, they ll only be able to get to the deadline on the senate race. you may be wondering why they can t get their act together. what happens. the deadline is 3:00 p.m. there s a hand count that will be reordered if the margin in any of these races is less than 0.25%. all of them are less than 0.5%. that s why we have a machine recount. if it s less than 0.25%, they ll do it by hand. again, the deadline is 3:00. go to the hand recouldn t. here s the deal. the hand recount is only for the overvote or under vote. the overvote is for those who chose more than one candidate. let s talk deadlines. thursday, deadline, 3:00 p.m., unless the court comes in and overturns that. the court will be meeting wednesday on a separate issuing
