there. ed: that recount process getting underway just in the last hour. it s going on right now live. katie: griff jenkins is live in broward county with how long this could take. griff? good morning, guys. going to take a while. after 67 counties in florida are doing machine recounts at this hour. let me show you this, though, because all eyes are on broward county which has a history of being on these stories on election recounts. that is the lawyers and members of the media trying to get inside there. and we have a camera inside right now we can show you. this is what s happening. the logic and accuracy testing. they re doing testing on these machines that will begin the recount within the hour, and that will lead us to the next day deadline, which is thursday, november 15th, when the second unofficial returns are due. if any of those in the governor, senate, or guttural commissioner are under the .25%, quarter percent hand recount is ordered for the overvote and undervotes. now,
attorneys for the scott campaign. we all know that the first recount will be done by a machine. what these machines do is kick out overvotes or undervotes. so you ask what is an overvote? an overvote is when somebody fills in the little blank circle or oval and then fills in the owe l val or blank circle right under it or on top of it, voting for the candidates and the opponent. the computers cannot compute that so they reject it. an undervote is where somebody doesn t bother to fill in either for the candidate or for the candidate s opponent. the machine kicks that out. you move on to the hand count it s not as if these people will be counting every single ballot that has been cast in florida. they will take those ones that have been kicked out by the machines and human beings will analyze those little circles. is that an intentional fill-in
opponent. that s what i have maintained the whole time. they came in with a letter. and then there were a is series of problems. the court allowed the ballot to be reconsidered. they allowed someone to dip into the ballot box and take out the ballot. and then they decided that it was a vote for my opponent when most experts who look at the ballot say because of so many confusing marks it should have been an overvote or not counted for anyone. yeah. some could easily say that check mark is for you and that it should be thrown out. this strikes people in such a strange way. it all comes down essentially to a coin toss. but not really. you re going to have your names printed on separate pieces of
guidance, which i think would be a really good option for them. the other thing that they can do is they can decide not to count that ballot and change their opinion that it is an overvote. this is remarkable from the beginning, almost regardless of the turnout. more than 23,000 people voted in this election. did you ever imagine that this would all come down to one vote and a potential tie-breaker? i knew it was going to be close, but i never imagined that it would be tied. and honestly, i think the process for the recount went really smoothly. and during the recount if they had said, okay, shelly, it s a tie, i would be much more accepting of this coin toss game of chance conclusion. but the end of the recount, i was ahead by one vote. and so it would be really disappointing for the story to change. instead of every vote matters, you can win by one vote in virginia, to have the story turn
i m getting calls from all over the state and all over the country about this ballot. a lot of people are saying that that could be a check mark. but the real point is that this is called on overvote. when people vote for too many people and it gets confusing, it was determined on tuesday that that vote would not be counted because it was an overvote. and i agree with that decision. that ballot is very confusing. so this crazy process continues whereby next week your name and our opponent s name will be put on pieces of paper, then cut up, then put into a bowl. at one point it said a hat. and someone is going to pull the winner s name out of the bowl. is this what your political future rests on? well, it does really sound crazy. and i am holding onto my faith in the process.
