victim of political persecution. this is an attack on the fabric of our system. his opponents say no one is above the law. this is about accountability. how strong is the case against him? there really is a question about whether this is a valid prosecution. should he be invoking his right to remain silent and in the race for president, his would be 2024 rivals are forced to defend the man they want to defeat. the unprecedented indictment of a former president of the united states is an outrage. welcome to inside politics sunday. i m abby . phillip. thank you for joining us real estate tycoon television star president of the united states, and this week, donald j . trump will add a new title criminal defendant. trump will fly to new york on on monday and will be arraigned in lower manhattan on tuesday, and sources tell cnn that the indictment includes more than 30 counts related to business fraud , though the specifics remain under seal. we ll see what evidence there is when
trump wins in court? and he wins the election. let s discuss all of this with our great political panel. cnn s david chalian laura baron lopez of the pbs news hour sarah long well of the bulwark and cnn s jeff zeleny and jeff what s striking to me? it s not that they re defending him. obviously i think that we would expect, especially those individuals to defend him. but it s the tone of it, uh, dialing up the outrage meter as high as they can possibly get it, which seems to me to be right out of trump s playbook. producing outraged about something that now is in the hands of the legal sphere without question. i mean, we ve not really seen the rallying behind the former president since the last time he had a crisis of trouble, so we have seen it many times, but it s been a minute and we all have been sort of wondering this year. is it going to be different is the exhaustion factor for the former president? so high? will this be different? it s not different. it s exactly the same. when
and now that s barr. so there were things outside the justice department that barr wanted to see or have access to that he may have been impeded. and that is why he has these new authorities. that is sort of our best guess at this point because there s no other, you know, explanation i guess. there is no other explanation, joyce. there is no other explanation than what has been articulated in the last ten minutes. this is a political power grab. this is so outside the norms of law enforcement and intelligence. and i think one of the most alarming things is that the only people jumping up and down in opposition are people out of government and out of elected office. what strikes you, joyce, about this moment and this development? you know, i do think that this is shocking. the problem is this whole administration is so shocking that sometimes the outrage meter, it s hard for the public
this moment and this development? you know, i do think that this is shocking. and the problem is that this whole administration is so sh k shocking sometimes the outrage meter it s hard for the public to read where we are. but i think we re off the scale today. i sat on the doj side of the table a time or two when i wanted to use evidence in a criminal prosecution. there we re talking about a case that everyone was certain there was a criminal violation we wanted to talk to, aside from this, that you pointed out was a scavenger hunt, to see if they request find cases. but in those cases prosecutors were respectful of the intelligence community s equities because we understood real people s lives were at
of him. he s the president. i think it also grows, the question of why people don t feel loyal to donald trump in many respects, loyalty starts at the top. so we ve seen people, once they are out of his or ridge, they turn on him. this is something you often see in washington. bret: guy, the outrage meter is always at 11 in washington. it seems like every day is another thing. heads explode. whether they should or shouldn t, we leave it to the viewers at home but god, what do you think of the political impact here potentially as we head towards midterms on both of these stories. i tend to agree with steve that on omarosa, this is a passing fascination. she is wall-to-wall on another network right now talking to anyone who will listen about all of these allegations, the only played at the beginning of the clip, if true, would be huge,
