WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Some in the sturgeon community are concerned about its future, as the DNR’s top biologist faces criminal charges.
Ryan Koenigs is one of four people charged in a caviar processing investigation.
“I know every fishing club president and everybody around the lake,” said Otter Street Fishing Club vice president Don Herman. “It’s giving everyone a bad taste.”
If you take a look around Lake Winnebago during sturgeon spearing season, you’d think it’s more of a family than a group of spearers. And it’s a family Koenigs has been very much a part of for decades, according to Sturgeon for Tomorrow, a non-profit organization dedicated to the future of sturgeon.

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Signs of the ice fishing season are appearing across Lake Winnebago.
In Oshkosh, The Otter Street Fishing Club installed its vehicle bridges Friday morning.
“72-feet long is the bridge. We’ll probably have two of them out for sure. We have two cracks. We might have to put three out, but there’s a bridge out by Quinney. Both sides of the lake right now have cracks,” said Don Herman, Otter Street Fishing Club Vice President.
Herman tells FOX 11 dangerous cracks typically form along the Winnebago shorelines each year. He says ice has been slow to form, and the season is a few weeks behind.

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – As dates on the calendar approach the third week of January, ice continues to form on places like Lake Winnebago.
Experts say there are about six to eight inches of ice covering the frozen body of water.
On the banks of the lake in Oshkosh, Perry Harrer checked the conditions Monday morning. He says he’s ready for some ice fishing.
“Walleyes. But anything you know. You get the crappies, the white bass, whatever. A fish is a fish. And I haven’t been out this year yet, but I retired now, so I king of want to get out there.”
