Northbound US-23 at MM 11 closed from crash, fire

The Monroe News SUMMERFIELD TWP. A truck driver suffered serious injuries when his rig drove off U.S. 23, crashed and burst into flames Thursday afternoon. Northbound lanes of the highway were closed for hours while the scene was cleared. Only one lane was reopened four hours after the accident. It was a pile of mess, said Summerfield Fire Chief Nick Lucas. The truck driver was headed north near Exit 11 when the 18-wheeler left the roadway for unknown reasons. Lucas said the rig struck a large tree, cutting it half. The tree was about two feet in diameter at the base.

33-year-old critically injured in crash on U.S. 23 in Monroe County Updated Mar 03, 2021; MONROE COUNTY, MI A 33-year-old Toledo woman was injured Tuesday in a crash in Monroe County’s in Whiteford Township, police said. The crash occurred at 10:50 p.m. March 2 when the woman, who was driving a Chevrolet Impala north on U.S. 23, went off the highway north of Sterns Road and into the median, striking a traffic barrier over the Ottawa Lake Outlet., according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s office. The vehicle crashed through the barrier and fell 24 feet into the water, police said. The woman was not wearing a seatbelt, and it is unclear at this time if she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.
