SUMMERFIELD TWP. A truck driver suffered serious injuries when his rig drove off U.S. 23, crashed and burst into flames Thursday afternoon.
Northbound lanes of the highway were closed for hours while the scene was cleared. Only one lane was reopened four hours after the accident. It was a pile of mess, said Summerfield Fire Chief Nick Lucas.
The truck driver was headed north near Exit 11 when the 18-wheeler left the roadway for unknown reasons. Lucas said the rig struck a large tree, cutting it half. The tree was about two feet in diameter at the base.
Toledo woman seriously injured in US-23 crash

The victim has since been identified as Sonya Maris Sigarroa, 33, of Toledo. She remained in critical condition in an area hospital on March 6.

A Toledo woman is reported to be in critical condition for injuries sustained when her car struck a traffic barrier on US-23 and plummeted 24 feet into water, the Monroe County Sheriff s Office reported.
The accident happened about 10:50 p.m. Tuesday on northbound US-23, near Sterns Road, Exit 1, in Whiteford Township.
According to initial reports, the 33-year-old woman was driving a blue Chevrolet Impala northbound when, for unknown reasons, she drove off the highway to the west and into the center median.
