CSPAN2 In Depth In Depth With Toni Morrison July 12, 2024

Pleased to have with us Toni Morrison for indepth conversation about her lifes work. Toni morrison, as he began, ive seen several citations that you told people that its easiest best most apt to describe you as a black woman novelist. Is that correct . Absolutely. What are we the public to take away from your choice of those three words . I think it was an attempt on my part to choose to be given the status of honorary white male writer. Generally speaking, womens work has been reduced to regional or merely or people complement ethnic writers by saying or implying that they are as good as mainstream writers and whereas i understand the complement, i thought it would be better for me to, at least in the late 60s early 70s to establish once and for all that all three of those things play, and black, i am a woman, and im a writer and they go together. Youve also always been a teacher. Yes. Why is that important to who you are and what you do . Edit quite know what else to do when i gradua

What is the empowered university . The notion is this, our universities should be look at universities and be honored with self. We talk about our leadership and our society that institutions that are healthy and secure should be willing to recognize whatever is going well, because knowledge of course, but also to be willing to say, but weve got a way to go. So its empowered to be honest with self and the subtitle which is shared leadership, culture change and academic success, starts with the notion that its not about the one person. Its not just about the University President , its about all of us working together with the vision of educating students and thats the notion of empowerment. And i found the subtitle really interesting, too, because if you even look at the cover of the book, you dont have one listed out as higher than the other or a greater priority than the other. You really have them almost laid out as concentric circles. You said that well. That we all rely on each oth

And from time to time when ive done this panel with friends and colleagues, ive called it on or off their pedestals. The debate over statues, memorials, memory and meaning. And ive discussed this topic at twice or three times with edna medford. And it is evolving even between us as we proceed over about a year and a half. And its a pleasure to welcome not only edna medford, but also liz varon and Gary Gallagher to join the discussion. Of 1,728 confederate memorials in 22 states and the district of columbia, 110 have been removed in the past few years. And three new ones have been built. So it is good to have the opportunity to take a snapshot. At best it will be a snapshot. And i think that we all have to agree that however we feel about art, ography and icons, history, and american heroes and villains alike, that the controversy over statues and memorials thought only attributed to confederates in the south and also to those, and for example and ill show you imanls, honoring figures i

Should be empowered to look in the mirror and its a way of talking about society and institutions that are helping and should be recognized whatever is going well but also willing to say we have a way to go. The subtitle starts with the notion its abou that all of usg together with the notion. I found the subtitle interesting at the cover of the book you dont have one higher than the other. Why was that . They are connected and thats the point there are ways in which we work collectively through those to think about the notion of the sense of empowering. You tell an important story in this where its never an overnight thing. To plant the seeds and then have time to grow and its a great example of that as a person going through their own journey of a think about that time timee which for a lot of liters isnt always easy. We start with the idea we are under 60yearsold and ive been fortunate to be there for 25 years and what ive learned is the success that we have had has come as the resu
