Forced to cancel our meticulously-crafted European-travel plans, we purchased a recreational vehicle and answered the call of the great outdoors.
Meeting in person at Thomas Auditorium, zoning board members voted unanimously to uphold the decision of code enforcement director Toby Linville, who had ruled that a gun range on a vacant 9.7-acre parcel in Edneyville was not a commercial facility requiring a special-use permit under the county’s land development code (LDC).
Forty-five people who were spread far apart in the auditorium had been greeted at the hall’s entrance by 10 sheriff’s Kevlar-deputies, who remained throughout the four-hour meeting to ensure order.
The subject of the hearing was a shooting range built by Travis Rector on land he owns with his wife, Virginia “Ginney” Fox Rector, off Osprey Lane north of Point Lookout Vineyards. A former Hendersonville police officer, Rector owns a gunsmithing and firearms training business, although he testified he conducts no training at the gun range on his property.

As we look for ways to enjoy our surroundings especially wide-open spaces without crowds of people there’s no better place than the beaches to rent a bike or kayak, or to lace up your sneakers for a hike.
Here’s a guide to outdoor excursions around the Delaware beaches that you can enjoy solo or with a small group.
SANTA ROSA BEACH Walton County commissioners will consider proposals for residential developments, a hotel and a bank when they meet Thursday for their monthly session dedicated to county planning issues.
The meeting is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the courthouse annex at 31 Coastal Centre Blvd. in Santa Rosa Beach. It also will be available online via Zoom teleconferencing at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89555508937.
Among the major items on the agenda is the requested approval of a final order for construction of the Town Center mixed-use development. Plans for the development call for a 92-town home residential component the maximum allowed on the site along with a restaurant and a mixed-use structure with commercial spaces and 51 rooms for lodging.
