Pawtucket plans vaccine block party for high school students

“Our students have been through a lot,” said Emily Rizzo, a spokeswoman for the mayor. “Why not offer them an engaging experience rather than something they have to do?”  Pawtucket has already vaccinated 650 students between the ages of 16 and 18. The state s goal is for them to vaccinate 1,700 more students in that age group.   High schools across Rhode Island have scheduled vaccination clinics for their students over the age of 16; the first one was Monday at Cranston High School East. Gov. Dan McKee said last week that his administration would work with any high school that wants to host a vaccination clinic for students.

Learning center s teen apprentices build tiny houses for veterans

The Center for Dynamic Learning has been helping at-risk youth build self-confidence, find purpose and passion with its hands-on, student-centered curriculum based in science, technology, engineering, arts, math and manufacturing.  It’s an alternative approach to traditional classroom learning that helps keep kids engaged, gives them experience and gets them prepared for jobs in high-demand industries. Children from kindergarten through grade 12 are served through the nonprofit organization that focuses on collaboration, critical thinking and career preparation.   Fifteen different experiential learning programs are taking place through the Center for Dynamic Learning, and one initiative in particular is designed to make a profound impact on the lives of some special veterans in the community.

Vibe Lounge closed for at least two weeks

PAWTUCKET – Vibe Lounge on Broad Street is now closed until at least the date of a planned city hearing on May 11 after a shooting and other incidents there. The City Council’s Board of License Commissioners held a rare weekend emergency hearing last Saturday, April 24, to schedule formal action on the matter for Tuesday, April 27, and the board ended up continuing the matter for two weeks until May 11 so an attorney for the owners can prepare a defense. Responding to concerns from commissioners, attorney Peter Petrarca assured the council that no one will be in the building during the two weeks under a voluntary closure.
