BUTUAN CITY - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has maintained its red tide alerts in two areas of the Caraga region. In its latest shellfish bulletin, the BFAR said Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur and Litalit Bay in San Benito, Surigao del Norte remain positive for red tide. "Latest laboratory results indicated that shellfish collected in said areas still positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poison or toxic red tide that is beyond the regulatory limit," the BFAR bulletin issued Thursday said. The agency warned residents in the two areas that all types of shellfish are not safe for human consumption. However, it noted that fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs collected in the specified areas are still safe for consumption so long as they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and their internal organs and intestines are removed before cooking.
