let s go to orrin liebermann. we couldn t keep you out of the jerusalem very long. this is the end of an era with netanyahu being out. but he s not going out quietly? not at all. in his last speech as prime minister just a few hours ago he spoke mostly in hebrew, but he said one phrase in english. he said we will be back soon, referring to his government. he lashed out at his rivals. after listing his accomplishments of 12 years in office and three years before that, he called the government replacing him a weak dangerous government and said only he can stand up to the biden administration when it comes to building the sejtments, when it comes to pushing back against a nuclear deal with iran. his replacement has promised a very different kind of politics, one of unity, one of agreement. he now leads the most diverse coalition in israel s history
and lloyd austin. it was a government sworn in by a very thin margin, that means it will be hard to govern especially with netanyahu being the head of the opposition, he plans to be an active head of the opposition and plans to make it difficult for neftali bennett. it is worth looking at netanyahu and worth considering the end of this era of netanyahu revolves around former president donald trump. for all the political gifts that trump gave netanyahu, moving the embassy, recognizing jerusalem as the capital of israel, the golan heights and the abraham acc accords, he never gave netanyahu an electoral victory. he lasted just 144 days after the administration of president donald trump. he had a functioning government for exactly zroef those days. quite an extraordinary transition, and an historic night in israel. orrin liebermann watching it all for us. this significant shift in
telling me right now, they are looking at intelligence that has tem worried iran could be aiming to take a swing at israel. what they don t know is would it come from iranian forces already inside syria? would it come from iranian third party affiliates if you will, like hezbollah in neb none. or would it come from inside iran itself, which would of course be a significant military escalation? all of this coming as the president withdraws from the iranian nuclear agreement. and of course they have very good intelligence that what iran has been doing is shipping weapons into syria. israel firing back, bombing some of those weapons sites. and now the escalation amongst all of this may be growing. u.s. military officials at this hour saying they are worried that iran could be prepared for some sort of strike against israel. very disturbing developments. barbara stand by. orrin liebermann is in jerusalem
iran will be fine either way that they have played by the rules and no matter what the difficulties arise iran will be okay. orrin liebermann is in jerusalem for us. as you know, the israeli government, the prime minister specifically have been strong advocates of pulling out of this deal. what s the latest over there? prime minister benjamin netanyahu launching a campaign over the last days and hours criticizing the deal and essentially trying to force a nixing of the deal in his words. if the u.s. pulls out of the deal, it will be a reimposition of sanctions. he wants to see the toughest most punishing sanks from the u.s. that would be what he would like to see come out of trump s decision. either way, they will welcome whatever decision comes out of this. but it s clear netanyahu is pushing for a nix the deal strategy. the french president, emmanuel macron has been aggressively lobbying president trump to stay in the deal.
agreements made in the nuclear deal, they haven t come to iran. those jobs haven t materialized. and they have seen the results of this. the iranian national currency has dropped by 35% compared to a year ago. many people feel that there is economically no solution. there have been protests here in january and december partly also against the system, about the economy, also about lack of freedoms. now of course, many iranians find this painful. and they feel as if they are a victim of these powers of the fight between the u.s. and the iranian leadership. yeah. so it is a serious moment right now in iran. they are going to have to very, very carefully assess what the president of the united states has just announced. thomas we will get back to you shortly. jim sciutto, i know you are anxious to weigh in as well. the fear we heard from barbara starr from orrin liebermann that
