Kerala has experienced high tidal waves and intense sea incursions due to the Kallakkadal phenomenon, which causes sudden sea swells causing rough waves in coastal areas. Houses have been damaged and roads have been flooded, forcing residents to shift to safer areas. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has placed the southern coasts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu under Orange Alert warning for rough seas and sea surge due to extremely strong waves of 0.5 to 1.5 meters.
