As we begin our final day of consideration of the fy21 spending bills, id like to thank you all for your kind words and well wishes and ask you, please, to indulge me in just a few more reflections. I came to congress in 1989, one of just 31 women in the house and senate and to this committee in 1993 alongside only six other women under the 64member panel. This body is better for the 100 women serving in the 116th congress and for the many women in the room today. Its my honor to address the full committee for my final time as the first woman chair. You know, its ironic [applaus [applause] thank you. Its ironic that back in 1993 i had to choose between serving on appropriations or ways and means. I was fortunate to be given that choice. And today, we markup my final appropriation bills in the ways and Means Committee room. I chose appropriations because i believed it was the best place to give more people a better chance at a better l

Life sure has changed for me. On some weekends i go home to the ranch, visit my family and friends. One day i was in my normal emmett uniform, levis, hat, getting fuel. The guy at the adjacent fuel pump kind of glanced at me a couple of times. As i was paying, he sauntered up and says, has anyone ever told you you look like brad little . I proudly said yes. He said, makes you mad, doesnt it . So much for glory in emmett. I could not have accomplished this much this past year, or most of my life, without the support of my wife, your first lady, theresa. Its rewarding to watch so many people learn about her. Theresa is selfless and thoughtful. She loves our family and our state. And im proud of you, theresa, im grateful to have you at my side. and to keep america prosperous and secure, we have to move fast, adapt quickly. we have to maintain a combat credible force capable of deterring any potential threat and manage competition with china and meet reality of renewed aggression in europe. we need to make sure to retain our competitive edge in an i think where emerging technologies from ai to 3d printing could fundamentally change the character of conflict. with general brown as chairman, i know i will be able to rely on his advice as a military strategist and leader of military innovation, dedicated to keeping the armed forces, the best in the world, and best in the history of the world and that s a fact. i ll also be able to s line with a leader unafraid to speak his mind, someone who will deliver an honest message that needs to be heard and always do the right thing when it s hard. that s the number one quality a president needs in a chairman. and that s the leader. that s the leader that all americans met three
