snchts is there a deal for speaker in the works? i m erin burnett and we re out front . we re at a key moment in this totally grueling fight for speaker of the house. we re told negotiations are under way at this moment as an 11th vote is now under way. it appears that kevin mccarthy has lost, lost 11 votes. five just today. despite now the longest speaker contest in generations. as we re watching this, we re told that mccarthy support aernz his critics are at least talking. they ve been behind closed doors trying to hammer out a deal in an attempt to show some progress. but what might that deal look like? mccarthy already essentially given them everything that they want. he is promising votes on term limits, allowing just one member to force a vote to oust him, just one. and there are four in the never kevin camp. if there is just one more republican that mccarthy can t get the gavel without help from democrats. there is so much to get to tonight. let s go to capitol
house republicans as was the indication 100 years ago are denying the man who thought he would be speaker in this case, kevin mccarthy, the necessary votes to win the speakers gavel. meaning that, right now, the house is completely paralyzed. we do not have a speaker, official members of congress or rules. and the math is frankly, only getting worse for kevin mccarthy. as the process drags out, the total number of republicans not voting for him is going up. the total number of republicans voting for him is going down. let s go straight to cnn s congressional correspondent manu raju. we re hearing that each side of this republican against republican standoff might appoint four members to negotiate some way forward? that s what sources tell us. that s what s under discussion right now. to come up with some sort of group, a negotiating grope to break the standoff paralyzing the house and preventing the congress from moving forward. four people close to kevin mccarthy. and othe
end up with a new kachb date? let s bring in one of the 20 rebellious republicans, chip roy of texas, a member of the house freedom caucus nominated jim jordan for the speaker ership the third ballot. congressman roy, thanks for joining us. you ve been vocal about the opposition to mccarthy to be speaker and nominated jim jordan this time round and voted for biron donaldson. you seem different from some of your rebels, though, that you seem actually focussed on a set of pri of principles and rule sets. do you agree with that assessment or no? first of all, thanks for having me on. that s close to correct. i would take some issue with saying that i ve been in constant opposition to mccarthy as much as trying to offer changes that i think are p paramount to make the housework again. that s a bipartisan criticism. we haven t had an open debate since 2016. we can t keep spending money we don t have and allow the border to be wide open and endanger people and keep business as us
