saw in places like haiti where the building codes are atrocious. well, they were not aware that there was the potential for a magnitude 7 earthquake so close to christchurch or a 6.3 aftershock for that matter. most of the strong earthquake activity tends to be centered farther away from christchurch. in any area of the world, whether it s here in the united states or whether it s in new zealand or japan or anywhere you have a range of different aged buildings, modern buildings tend to be built to modern building coats to withstand earthquakes, old buildings are not built to those standards. it s generally the old buildings that take the damage when it comes to these things this. the new build insurance do better. i m sure when the final line is written on this earthquake that will be one of the stories we ll see again. jon: it s the early morning hours right now in christchurch. they have a lot of people buried and to try to rescue.
as a seismologist can you give them any advice? what is the best way to go about it? well, the rescue, search and rescue efforts of course are something that trained teams are very, very comfortable doing. they have procedures in place. they need heavy equipment, obviously, logistics and then they go in and do their job. the problem is that this area right near christchurch has had several strong after shocks, magnitude between 5 and 6 over the several months since the 7 point earthquake last december. so they have to be ready to come out of the buildings that they are doing rescue in at a moment s notice if they start feeling another half shock because they don t know if another magnitude 5, 5 1/2 perhaps even 6/aftershock might take place. it s not very likely, but it s not impossible. jon: people say that multistory office towers, the windows blew

control tower had been hit by the quake. they are trying to bring in much-needed supplies. the rescue effort is being hampered by power and phone networks being disrupted. part of a nearby glazier fell into a lake causing large waves to hit into the shore. christchurch was hit by another earthquake five months but nobody was injured there, possibly buildings were weakened by it, that s why it caused such devastation. jenna: we ll talk more about why this quake was so powerful and damaging, david, thanks. jon: a tragic ending to a high seas hostage situation.
like a big boat but when you stick 19 pirates and four hostages, it let s crowded, uncomfortable and tempers could flair in there. whether this rpg was a planned event or maybe just somebody acting out. who shot the first two pirates? the investigation on this. and unfortunately the only witnesses we have are the remaining 15 pirates themselves. jon: very quickly, chuck we want to make a point, the navy didn t do anything to provoke this. they were following the ship but they weren t closing in, they didn t open fire on the vessel, they didn t send a boarding crew in until after they heard the shots. absolutely not. and anybody who says this was a botched hostage rescue or something is way off base. they were negotiating all of the fire was initiated on from the quest, and within the quest, and it wasn t until after that happened and the special ops folks boarded that they found the dead hostages.
