The global health body said that the sudden appearance of monkeypox at once in several countries where the disease is not typically found suggests undetected transmission for some time and recent amplifying events.
The global health body does not believe that the spread of the monkeypox virus outside of Africa requires mass vaccinations as measures like good hygiene and safe sexual behaviour will help control its spread, Reuters reported.
The monkeypox virus has so far been detected in as many as 15 countries. The outbreaks are raising alarm because the viral disease mostly occurs in the west and central Africa, and only very occasionally spreads elsewhere.
