The president says hes an Excellent Guy, so why did he just give him a shove out the door . Was it something he said . John berman here in for anderson. Those are the two questions tonight about departing white House Counsel don mcgahn. Mr. Mcgahn found out he was departing the same way secretary of state Rex Tillerson did, by reading the president s twitter feed. That tweet says white House Counsel don mcgahn will be leaving his position in the fall, shortly after the confirmation, hopefully, of judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States supreme court. I have worked with doug for a long time and truly appreciate his service. And sure enough, when the president was asked about it this afternoon, he had nothing but praise. A good man, a very good man. Don, Excellent Guy. Don mcgahn is a really good guy. Been with me a long time. Privately before this he
Rachel Maddow takes a look at the days top political news stories. Charge of grand larceny, a big stack of charges involving a large amount of money and potentially a large amount of jail time. The story they uncovered at the courthouse that day, for some reason, friedman had gotten this huge Criminal Liability he was facing winnowed down to almost nothing. All the prison time and felonies evaporated. Instead of being tried for evading 5 million in taxes, prosecutors let him plead guilty to one count of evaluating 50,000 worth of taxes. Not 5 million, 50,000. Instead of decades in potential prison time the deal he cut with prosecutors got him zero prison time. People do plea deals all the time they offer their testimony for prosecutors letting them off the hook and going easier on

The latest news from around the world with hosts John Berman and Poppy Harlow. Listen. Are you considering pardoning Paul Manafort . I have Great Respect for what hes done in terms of what hes gone through. You know he worked for Ronald Reagan for years. He worked for bob dole, i guess his firm worked for john mccain. He worked for many, many people. Many, many years. And i would say what he did, some of the charges they threw against him, every consultant, every lobbyist in washington probably does. Well, so much for draining the swamp. It seems very much that President Trump is not at all concerned about those charges Paul Manafort was found guilty of. In fact he later told the fox news interviewer that one of the reasons he had respect for manafort was that he didnt flip like Michael Cohen did. This is clearly something the president believes is part of a broader conspiracy against him. He even went on to say that he believed his own Justice Department was still under the control of
